2021 ANNUAL REPORT

Connecting what matters

Acquisition of Media Networks

The first step in executing HISPASAT’s Strategic Plan, aimed at converting HISPASAT into a satellite services and solutions company, was the acquisition of the signal management and transportation business of Media Networks Latin America, a subsidiary of the Telefónica group connected to the multimedia field. Thanks to this agreement, the company has strengthened its position as the benchmark operator in Latin America for satellite television related services.

After the incorporation of HISPASAT Peru, the new subsidiary arising from this acquisition, the company worked all year long, in strict compliance with the regulatory provisions, on integrating the services provided by Media Networks Latin America to the main telecom and television operations in the region, which offer content to millions of users.

Commitment to the Brazilian market

At the end of 2021, HISPASAT consolidated its commitment to Brazil by increasing its stake in HISPAMAR Satélites to 100%. The company thus acquired the 19.04% from Telemar (Oi) in HISPAMAR Satélites, thereby obtaining the entirety of the share capital in its subsidiary, incorporated in 2001 to operate the Amazonas fleet of satellites in the Brazilian 61º West orbital position.

This strategic operation is HISPASAT’s most important transaction in Brazil since its entry into the country more than 20 years ago and it is an example of the company’s commitment to the country and strengthens its role as a driver for connectivity and distribution of multimedia and television content by satellite.

Launch of the Conéctate Initiative

HISPASAT launched the Conéctate (Get Connected) initiative, a wholesale satellite internet service at 100 Mbps to bridge the digital divide in Spain. Thanks to its powerful capacity over Spain, the company guarantees immediate access of up to 100 Mbps and provides a response today to the goal of universal connectivity set forth in the Spanish Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.

This new rural broadband product by satellite is a neutral and open wholesale service that every telecom operator in the country can include in their offerings to be able to provide an immediate high-quality internet service.

Universal coverage and a rapid roll out make satellites an ideal technological solution to democratise Internet access and bring it where other alternatives do not reach. For this reason, Hispasat supports technological neutrality and complementary technological solutions that can provide an immediate response to the goal of connectivity for 100% of the population set forth in the Spanish government’s Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan for 2025.

Agreements with Eurona and Gesico2000

As part of this initiative, in 2021, HISPASAT closed two agreements, one with Eurona, the Spanish multinational with expertise in connectivity services and solutions for poorly-connected areas, and another with Gesico2000, the Spanish company with more than 25 years of experience in integrating telecom services by satellite, to extend this satellite internet solution of up to 100 Mbps in rural Spain and thus bridge the digital divide that has held back a good part of the country.

Connectivity in the Aralar mountain range

HISPASAT, together with Elewit and the Internet of Things (IoT) solutions integrator Nexmachina, led a pilot project to implement a series of connectivity solutions in the area aimed at improving the conditions of the shepherds in their cabins, ensuring their safety and optimising the resources of the towns in the area.

High sea connectivity

The Smart Boat pilot project, developed in tandem with Elewit and Nexmachina, involved the roll out of IoT sensors on a boat in Hondarribia to track the safety of its crew and improve its fishing activity.

Transformation Plan: Towards the new HISPASAT

HISPASAT launched its Transformation Plan at the start of 2021, aimed at adapting the company to the needs required by its new Strategic Plan. The first goal of this plan is to identify how HISPASAT’s current structure must evolve, both in its technical and personnel capacities, to be able to carry out the goal of providing the highest value-added service.

The Transformation Plan will provide the company a new dimension and turn it into a satellite services and solutions provider to attend to the growing demand for universal connectivity and data services with guaranteed quality, security and resilience. This way, the company will position itself as a benchmark in innovative products and services, ensuring profitability and providing a response to the current and future challenges of its customers and shareholders.
