In the video distribution market, Hispasat has maintained the portfolio of channels that use the fleet’s satellites to distribute their content. In addition, the company has managed to market the turnkey distribution service based on the managed operation of Hispasat Perú in the Lurín teleport, to the first European clients.
In the wholesale maritime business, biannual renewals have been closed with the main Spanish wholesale clients and business has been strengthened with global service providers to whom significant volumes of satellite capacity have been leased for the maritime season in the Mediterranean and Caribbean. In addition, the offer of housing and uplink services has increased in the company’s different teleports.
The retail maritime business, under the Axess brand, has maintained its commercial positioning in that business vertical.
In the security and emergency market, existing wholesale contracts have been renewed. In addition, Axess’ retail business has executed important contracts in 2023 with the Ministry of Defense of a European country, through the incumbent telecommunications operator in this country, to provide services to its armed forces deployed in Africa.
At the national level, within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan -financed by the European Union NextGenerationEU, Hispasat turned out to be, in 2023, the wholesale operator of the UNICO Rural Demand Program promoted by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, which allows the provision of a quality internet access service available in 100% of the Spanish territory.
This program offers the possibility of contracting a connection through the Hispasat satellite at an affordable price of 35 euros per month for users, without additional costs and an aid of up to 600 euros for the cost of the installation, with 100% coverage. % of the population in those areas where there is no access to fixed networks of at least 50 Mpbs. It is estimated that it will benefit 1.2 million homes.
In North America, Hispasat grew significantly in 2023 in the mobility verticals, taking advantage of the acceleration in demand experienced after the stoppage of these markets due to the COVID 19 pandemic. This year, the contracts signed with a leader in the provision of mobility services were expanded. IFC (“In Flight Connectivity”) for the leasing of capacity on the new Amazonas Nexus satellite: this operator had already committed long-term satellite capacity in the US and Brazil in previous years, and in 2023 it added capacity in the Atlantic North.
In 2023, a large volume of capacities used by several global integrators and service providers of North American origin for maritime mobility have been renewed for the Mediterranean and Caribbean seasons.; and a multi-year contract was also renewed for the satellite cellular backhaul vertical that serves important MNOs in the United States.En México, la actividad comercial ha sido muy intensa en 2023, principalmente en el ámbito de la conectividad en zonas rurales con el impulso de distintos proyectos impulsados por el gobierno.
Hispasat, through its retail offering under the Axess brand, has continued to lead the deployment of satellite backhaul networks of the main Mexican MNOs. It has also had a significant participation in the WiFi connectivity project in rural areas, directly through Axess, and providing wholesale capacity to other integrators that have participated in the project.
In Brazil, Hispasat has increased its participation in the oil & gas sector using the capacity of the H36W-1 and H55W-1 satellites. In this country, the school connectivity network has continued to be deployed by one of the country’s leading operators, now reaching more than 2,200 connected schools.
The focus on the backhaul vertical also allowed the group to sign important contracts with leading MNOs in Colombia and Chile, through its Axess brand.
In 2023, Hispasat has continued to promote digital inclusion projects in rural areas with the help of different governments in the region, with the aim of providing solutions that improve the quality of life and expectations of the citizens of these rural communities. To the teleeducation and telemedicine pilots deployed in Ecuador in collaboration with the government, as well as the teleeducation in Panama, Hispasat has added this year new teleeducation pilot projects in Colombia, together with the MinTIC, and in the Dominican Republic in collaboration with Indotel (Dominican Telecommunications Institute).
Hispasat’s commitment to the commercialization of innovative solutions in the video vertical has continued in 2023. To the wholesale OTT service “as a service”, launched in 2022, under the Hispasat Wave OTT brand, it has added this year the Hispasat Wave service OTT PLUS is a white label offering that not only includes full management of the technological platform and operations, but also adds a complete and attractive package of linear channels, as well as a catalog of on-demand content (VoD). In this way, operators in the region can now launch a streaming pay TV service without the need to make investments or face high expenses in a variable model. At the end of the year, the first contract was signed with the leading fiber optic operator in Ecuador, which will launch the Wave OTT PLUS service in early 2024 under its own brand.
GOVSATCOM HUB: As part of the global architecture of IRIS2, a “pool and share” system will be developed that will act as an orchestrator between the needs of users and the existing satellite capacities in Europe for government services. Hispasat is working on the definition of said system within two European consortia that have presented a proposal. Hispasat provides knowledge from the operator’s point of view. Participation in this program allows Hispasat to be positioned as a reference in the provision of GOVSATCOM (government secure communications) capabilities.
5G: Hispasat is actively collaborating in the 5G ecosystem with the aim of ensuring the integration of the satellite both at the standardization level (3GPP) and in the projects in which integration pilots are carried out. The main milestones in 2023 have been the development of Release 18 of the standard, which includes the satellite within the NTN (Non-Terrestrial Networks) networks in commercial frequency bands, and work has continued on the 5GMED project (deployment of services on a mixed terrestrial-satellite 5G network in the Mediterranean transport corridor).
Additionally, and within the scope of 5G, three additional projects have been started: 5G-STARDUST and TRANTOR, both subsidized by the European Commission within the Horizon Europe program and AROMA 3D with recovery and resilience funds.
Both projects aim to strengthen satellite integration within 5G with real demonstrations and analyze the relevant aspects necessary to include in the next Releases of the standard. It is also worth mentioning that the pilot deployment of a 5G small cell with stand-alone core network and satellite backhaul including edge computing technology to improve the user experience has been completed.
MOTOR VERDE: In 2023, Hispasat has successfully deployed a pilot of comprehensive forest protection, perimeter protection and connectivity solutions in the Las Hurdes project. Likewise, Hispasat has started exploring the potential development of a platform for monitoring, verification and certification of carbon credits through the processing of satellite images.
CYBERSECURITY: Communications security is an increasingly demanded and relevant value. The future of encryption is based on quantum technology and the satellite has a significant role in this field because it allows encryption keys to be distributed over great distances. In 2023, Hispasat has continued its work in exploring a GEO system for the transmission of quantum keys and has presented a proposal to the Spanish Space Agency for the development of a demonstrator.
LUNAR COMMUNICATIONS: Extraterrestrial exploration initiatives are growing and it is expected that in the coming years there will be more than 50 space missions to the Moon. These missions will require communications systems. The ESA (European Space Agency) is working on the development of a communications system to service these missions. Hispasat, within an international consortium, has participated in a preliminary study to establish the bases of the future system.
In 2023, Hispasat has continued working on the 2023-2025 Sustainability Plan, made up of 14 lines of action and in which the company identified those in which they contribute the most value, with the aim of ensuring responsible management of the business and advancing in the sustainability objectives and priorities of the Group, thus responding to the main expectations and demands of its interest groups. These commitments are specified in four sustainability priorities to address the challenges facing the organization and materialize existing opportunities, in order to occupy a leading position in the global business context.
Hispasat provides the national industry with access to international telecommunications satellite markets, incorporates components manufactured in Spain in all its missions and allows Spanish companies to validate their new satellite equipment by embarking it on their satellites. In addition, it promotes an industrial returns program that commits its manufacturers to continue investing in Spanish technology during the years following the construction of each of its satellites, which has generated more than 1,000 million euros in investment committed by large builders. international in Spain.
The satellites in Hispasat’s fleet provide the necessary boost to local populations and economies in rural areas located in its coverage footprint to interact with the world and access online resources – economic, educational, healthcare, etc. – similar to available in urban areas. They constitute a tool to close the digital divide, increase the productivity of the local economy, stop depopulation and advance the social cohesion of the territories. To demonstrate the effectiveness of this technology, several pilot initiatives have been launched in Spain and Latin America.
